Monroe Community College (MCC) has opened doors of opportunity for over 579,000 students since fall 1962. Jorge Alas, professor of world languages, prepares students to become culturally competent and linguistically diverse citizens in a global workforce through his Spanish courses. As a coordinator of summer study-abroad programs, he also leads MCC students on location in Spain and Latin America.

Myra P. Henry, Ed.D., '09
YWCA of Rochester and Monroe County
As president and chief executive officer of YWCA of Rochester and Monroe County, Dr. Myra Henry builds and enhances collaborations in the community to tackle issues affecting people of color, with the intent to “eliminate racism and empower women.”
Racial equality and women empowerment are her lifelong mission. For over two decades, she has worked with a multitude of groups across Greater Rochester ─ including leadership teams in higher education, medical centers and nonprofits ─ in developing the area’s next generation of leaders.
“MCC provided a solid academic foundation to build upon personally and professionally,” she said. Dr. Henry holds an associate degree from MCC, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in organizational management from Keuka College, and a doctorate in executive leadership with an equity lens from St. John Fisher University. Dr. Henry is among MCC alumni who have excelled professionally and made a positive impact on the community and the college.
